Microsoft OneDrive Files On-Demand

Access all your files without using up your device storage

OneDrive Files On-Demand

We’re really excited about OneDrive Files On-Demand here at Valto, we have made several posts about the OneDrive sync client which has been improving steadily over the past year or so. Syncing issues used to be one of the most prevalent customer complaint about using the product. The new next generation sync client has vastly improved this and is widely used by our customer base now.

Microsoft are keen to continue improving this and one of the most exciting features is the OneDrive Files On-Demand. This has been one of the most requested features since the launch of Office365 and OneDrive is going to revolutionise the capabilities of the suite.

Essentially the OneDrive Files On-Demand means that users will now be able to access their SharePoint and OneDrive files through the OneDrive Client without having to download them all to their PC. This functionality will also replace the Open with Windows Explorer options and remove the need for any third-party drive mapping products to be installed.

Finally, improvements have also been made to the mobile clients meaning users will be able to take offline copies to access them on the move.

We expect this new functionality to be launched as part of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

New MAXPATH limits in SharePoint and OneDrive

Another new feature that has been added and available within SharePoint Online is changes to the MAXPATH from 256 characters to 400 and removal of some of the unsupported characters (# and %).

This will be another huge boost to SharePoint meaning customers can maintain a familiar folder structure when migrating from legacy file systems.

These changes are huge for Office365 and working towards the ability to easily access all of your documents from any device and addressing some of the major pain points for the tools!
