Norkem was previously operating on a SharePoint Classic intranet developed by another provider. While feature-rich, the system was becoming outdated and posed a growing risk due to Microsoft’s retirement of the SharePoint Classic framework. There was a pressing need to migrate to SharePoint Modern to ensure long-term support, security, and usability.
The business had accumulated a large amount of content and custom workflows that needed to be preserved and migrated. However, they also lacked key features like a central employee directory and a system for managing controlled documents. With critical workflows in place and a reliance on structured document access, the migration had to be carefully planned and delivered with minimal disruption.
Norkem is a global chemical distributor with offices worldwide, supplying speciality and general chemicals across industries. Operating in a regulated environment, it requires strict auditing and secure information management.
Valto was engaged to deliver a full redesign and migration of Norkem’s intranet to SharePoint Modern. The new platform was built from the ground up, with fresh layouts that replicated the look and feel of the original while taking advantage of Modern’s improved functionality. Department sites were created, permissions reconfigured, and content was migrated.
In addition to migrating all existing data and workflows, Valto introduced new modules for controlled document management and an employee directory, both of which had been missing from the previous system. These enhancements supported better collaboration and compliance, while also bringing a more unified user experience to the intranet.
The new SharePoint Modern intranet is now live and fully supported, providing Norkem with a secure, compliant, and sustainable platform for internal communication and document management. All legacy content and critical workflows were successfully migrated, including custom Power Automate flows.
By moving to SharePoint Modern, Norkem has reduced the risk associated with unsupported web parts and legacy systems. They now benefit from enhanced document control, better visibility of staff information, and a more user-friendly interface. Looking ahead, Norkem may choose to integrate their department sites with Microsoft Teams and explore additional app-based functionality. Their new intranet lays a strong foundation for future digital enhancements.
