What to think about before migrating to Office 365
It’s important to consider your entire system and work processes before thinking about your Office 365 migration plan.
With Valto’s Office 365 migration services, you’ll begin with a thorough audit and consultation to go over all the processes and steps needed. We’ve put together a brief guide to all the questions you’ll need to ask before migrating to the cloud-based platform:
- How much data are you migrating? This can include email inboxes, user accounts, files, networks and applications
- Which system are you currently using?
- How much is your migration budget?
- Do you have a migration deadline? How much time do you have to complete the move to Office 365?
What will an Office 365 migration entail?
Migrating data to any platform is always a tricky task – you need to figure out how much you’re moving, where you’re moving it to, whether you need to convert anything, and where it’s all going to go. And that’s just the start.
When it comes to Office 365 email migration, the actual migration process will look different depending on the kind of transition you need.
Office 365 staged migration
A staged migration moves your data over to the cloud gradually. Your mailboxes and other data will be moved from an outdated Exchange service (Microsoft Exchange 2003 or 2007) to Exchange Online for Office 365. Using Directory Synchronisation, all mailboxes are moved over using the on-premises Active Directory.
We particularly recommend staged migrations for medium companies, though it should be noted that any enterprises using Exchange 2010 or 2013 aren’t able to use this migration method.
Office 365 IMAP migration
For companies who currently use an email system not hosted on Exchange – for example Google Mail (Gmail) – IMAP migration is ideal. There are, however, a few limitations: you can only migrate up to 50,000 mailboxes, future mail sent to the old mailbox won’t be migrated, and only emails will move – meaning things like contacts and calendars will need to be manually moved.
Office 365 cutover migration
An all-in-one migration method, the cutover brings everything from your on-premises Exchange server to Office 365’s cloud-based service. Everything moves at once, and individual objects can’t be selected.
Cutover migrations are ideal for small companies (with less than 2,000) mailboxes or under 150 users. Once complete, all users will be set up with an Office 365 account.
Office 365 hybrid migration
For businesses with more than 2,000 mailboxes and Exchange 2010, 2013 or 2016, a hybrid migration can offer flexibility. This method allows users to select which mailboxes to migrate, and also allows for single sign-on and synchronised passwords.
