What is the SharePoint Migration Tool?

Also known as SPMT, the SharePoint Migration Tool is a software application used to transfer files, data and other information to the SharePoint or SharePoint Online platform.

How does the SharePoint Migration Tool work?

The SharePoint Migration Tool process involves six major steps:

Authentication – select the tenant you’re migrating your files to, and authenticate with an admin account.

Scan – every file will be scanned by the SPMT, searching for any potential problems and ensuring you have full admin access to everything you plan to migrate.

Packaging – the tool creates a manifest and content package for the migration

Upload – in this step, the content package is sent to Microsoft Azure. Both the manifest and your files will be encrypted for safety.

Import – Azure and the SharePoint tenant communicate to move the files. A live report will be created with migration updates, and a log of files moved will be stored in Azure. After the import process is complete, you’ll be able to view a final report.

Session/resume – A list with information about the migration project will be stored in your OneDrive account. This is important in case you want to resume migration using SPMT for a later project.
