AVD or Windows 365: the decision

Work out which fits before anything is built. AVD gives you control, custom images and cost levers; Windows 365 gives you a fixed per-user price and far less to manage. The right answer depends on your workloads, your IT capacity and how predictable your user numbers are, and for many organisations it is both, for different groups of people.

Replacing legacy VDI

Migrate from Citrix, VMware Horizon or Remote Desktop Services, with application discovery, image build, user profile migration and a phased cutover. Licensing changes in that market have made this a live cost conversation for a lot of organisations.

Architecture and security

Design the host pools, images, identity, conditional access, network and data residency so that nothing lands on the endpoint and access is governed properly. This is the part that makes AVD defensible in a regulated environment.

Contractor and third-party access

Give temporary users, contractors, offshore teams or a newly acquired business secure access to your applications on their own hardware, without procuring devices or extending your domain to machines you do not control.

Cost optimisation and governance

Practical answers on how Azure Virtual Desktop compares with Windows 365, what it actually costs to run, whether personal devices are safe to use, and what migrating from Citrix, VMware or Remote Desktop Services involves.

It depends on control and predictability. AVD lets you shape the images, host sizing, applications and cost levers, and it runs multiple users per host, which is what makes it economical at larger scale. Windows 365 gives you a fixed per-user monthly price and very little to design or manage, which suits smaller user counts and teams without infrastructure capacity. For a good number of organisations the answer is both, for different groups. We will tell you which, and we deliver either, so we have no reason to push one.
It can be, and it is not automatic. Costs depend on how the hosts are sized, whether autoscaling and shutdown schedules are configured, which storage tier profiles sit on, and whether commitment discounts apply. Configured well, it usually compares favourably with a legacy VDI platform and with the total cost of managing physical devices. Configured badly, it costs more than what it replaced. We establish what your current estate costs before we design anything, so the comparison is real rather than assumed.

The platform gives you encryption, conditional access, Microsoft Defender integration and full control over where data resides. The security position depends almost entirely on the identity and access design rather than the desktop itself: who can connect, from which device state, with which permissions. That design work is part of every engagement, because getting it wrong moves the problem into Azure rather than solving it.
A focused deployment for a defined user group is typically weeks. A migration from an established VDI platform with application discovery, image build and profile migration takes longer, and the timeline is driven by applications rather than by Azure. We phase it so a pilot group is working early.
If you want us to. Some organisations take ownership with documentation and knowledge transfer; others prefer we retain monitoring, patching, image lifecycle and cost review. Virtual desktop estates drift more than most infrastructure, so somebody needs to own the periodic review either way.
Mostly for the sizing, the identity design and the cost governance, which are the three things that decide whether this works. Deploying AVD is not difficult. Sizing it correctly for real usage, designing access properly, and keeping the running cost defensible over three years are where experience earns its money, and where most disappointing projects went wrong.
