Tenant-to-Tenant Migration

Tenant-to-tenant migration is the process of moving users, data, applications and other digital resources from one Microsoft 365 tenant to another. It is commonly required following mergers, acquisitions, divestments or organisational restructuring, helping businesses consolidate or separate their Microsoft environments while maintaining access to important information.

What is tenant-to-tenant migration?

Tenant-to-tenant migration involves transferring Microsoft 365 data, users and services from one tenant to another.

A Microsoft 365 tenant is the dedicated environment an organisation uses to manage its users, identities, applications and cloud services. When organisations merge, separate or restructure, they may need to move information between these environments.

Depending on the organisation and the scope of the migration, this can include Exchange Online mailboxes, SharePoint sites, OneDrive files, Teams data and user identities.

Careful planning is important to determine what needs to move, where it needs to go and how users will continue accessing the services and information they rely on.

How does tenant-to-tenant migration work?

A tenant-to-tenant migration typically starts by assessing the existing and destination Microsoft 365 environments. This helps identify users, data, applications, permissions and dependencies that need to be considered as part of the migration.

The destination tenant can then be prepared before data and services are migrated. Depending on the project, this might involve moving mailboxes, SharePoint content, OneDrive files and other Microsoft 365 data.

User identities, domains, permissions and access also need to be considered so that people can continue working effectively once the migration is complete.

The exact approach will depend on the size and complexity of the environments, the Microsoft 365 services involved and the reason for the migration.

Tenant-to-tenant migration vs tenant consolidation

Tenant-to-tenant migration and tenant consolidation are closely related, but they are not necessarily the same thing.

Tenant-to-tenant migration describes the process of moving users, data or services from one Microsoft 365 tenant to another.

Tenant consolidation involves bringing multiple Microsoft 365 tenants together into a smaller number of environments, often a single tenant. Tenant-to-tenant migration may therefore be one of the processes used as part of a wider consolidation project.
