St Ignatius College is a Catholic, Jesuit school based in North London, providing education and development for young people across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5. With a thriving Sixth Form, a rich heritage, and a mission rooted in academic excellence and care for the whole person, the school serves a diverse community and is committed to helping students grow into confident, compassionate adults.

The Solution

The project began with a workshop to understand the college’s estate, vision, and requirements. From there, Valto provided detailed recommendations for a Microsoft 365 migration strategy, covering departmental files, staff accounts, and student storage. Each department underwent mapping and data cleansing to streamline the migration process and ensure a more efficient setup post-move. Technical blockers around legacy server patching and agent deployment were handled with engineering support, while careful planning allowed for a smooth execution of the migration to SharePoint and OneDrive. Sensitive labels, retention policies, and security tooling such as Defender for Endpoint were introduced to improve compliance and device management. Post-migration, Valto provided ongoing support and review to ensure successful adoption of the new tools across staff and students.

The Challenge

St Ignatius College was operating a large hybrid IT environment, with legacy file servers, an outdated infrastructure, and some remaining G Suite subscriptions. Staff and departmental data, totalling around 2TB, was spread across 12 departments, with inconsistent access and limited collaboration capabilities. Their legacy environment posed several technical challenges, including end-of-life hardware, patching requirements, and limited access to install necessary tools. Alongside these infrastructure concerns, they also needed to prepare for a large-scale migration to Microsoft 365, covering not only staff and departmental data but also student storage. This included integrating Microsoft 365 security and compliance tools and transitioning remote desktop and collaboration systems into a more unified and modern platform.

Complex Legacy File Servers

Required Better Security

End-of-life Hardware

The project gave the college a fully modernised IT environment, improving collaboration and remote access for both staff and students. Data is now securely stored and easily accessible through Microsoft 365, supported by improved document management and device visibility. By eliminating legacy infrastructure and consolidating platforms, St Ignatius College reduced costs and positioned itself to better support teaching, learning, and administration.

Staff now benefit from clearer data structures, better compliance tooling, and remote management capabilities. Next steps for the college include further consolidation of their remaining hybrid environment and a device refresh using Intune and other Microsoft 365 products. These changes will continue to enhance performance, security, and ease of management across the estate, ensuring long-term sustainability for their digital strategy.
