What is Power Apps?

Microsoft Power Apps is a low-code platform for creating custom business applications around an organisation’s processes, data and users.

Rather than relying on spreadsheets, paper-based processes or off-the-shelf software that may not fully meet business requirements, Power Apps enables organisations to create applications tailored to the way their teams work.

Apps can connect to Microsoft 365, Microsoft Dataverse and a wide range of other data sources and services through connectors. Microsoft describes Power Apps as a rapid development environment for creating cloud-connected, cross-platform business applications with minimal code.

How does Power Apps work?

Power Apps provides low-code tools for designing and building business applications without requiring the same level of traditional software development.

Depending on the requirements, organisations can create canvas apps, which provide greater control over the application’s interface and layout, or model-driven apps, which are built around business data and processes.

Apps can connect to data held across Microsoft 365, Dataverse and other services using prebuilt and custom connectors. This allows information from different systems to be brought together and used within a single application.

Power Apps can also work alongside other Microsoft Power Platform tools, such as Power Automate, allowing organisations to combine applications with workflows, approvals and automated processes.

How can Valto help with Power Apps?

Valto helps organisations design and build Power Apps that improve business processes and solve practical challenges.

Our Microsoft specialists can work with your organisation to understand the process you want to improve, who will use the application and the data and systems it needs to connect to.

This can include canvas and model-driven app development, Dataverse configuration, Microsoft 365 integrations, workflow automation, security and role-based access, testing and user experience optimisation. Valto’s existing Power Apps development service also includes stakeholder reviews, documentation and knowledge transfer.

The aim is not simply to build an app, but to create a practical, secure and maintainable solution that improves the way people work and can evolve alongside your organisation.

Power Apps vs Power Automate

Power Apps and Power Automate are both part of Microsoft Power Platform, but they are designed for different purposes.

Power Apps is primarily used to build business applications that give users an interface for viewing information, entering data and completing tasks.

Power Automate is used to automate workflows and processes, such as moving information between systems, managing approvals and sending notifications.

The two are often used together. For example, an employee could submit a request through a Power App, with Power Automate then triggering an approval process and notifying the relevant people. This matches how Valto positions the two capabilities, with Power Apps focused on tailored business applications and Power Automate on workflows, approvals and notifications.
